Options for Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is extremely versatile. You can find a floor to go with almost any decorating style. Many consumers have little to no idea how many options are available when considering hardwood flooring. Each species, cut, and style has its unique look and feel. Deciding what to purchase can feel overwhelming, so let us help.

To get started, you must answer three main questions.

The Three Main Questions

  • What Species?

There are lots to choose from. You can look at domestic woods like oak, maple, cherry, etc. If you still can't find what you're looking for, then you can look into exotics, like jatoba, teak, jarrah, etc. Whatever you choose, make sure it fits your "lifestyle" not just "design style." Hardwoods range drastically on the janka scale (a scale that measures hardness) and that can make a huge difference if you have kids or pets.

  • Solid or Engineered?

Solid hardwood is exactly what you think it is: solid pieces of wood cut into planks. This means it can be sanded and refinished many times. However, it’s not good with moisture and can be greatly affected by humidity, so it's not recommended for below-grade basements. Engineered hardwood has a top layer of real wood glued to several layers of high-density plywood. Because of this, engineered floors hold up better to moisture and humidity which allows you to install it in more areas of the house, including below-grade basements.

  • Pre-Finished or Unfinished

Pre-finished floors are stained and finished ready to be installed out of the box. This requires you to decide before the floors are installed. What you see is what you get. Unfinished floors come in their rawest form. These floors are installed, puttied, sanded, then stained, and finished on-site according to the customer's taste. Most installers will put down a few different stains to make it easier to see the color on the actual floors and not just on the can of stain.

Increase the Value of Your Home

Yes, hardwood flooring is generally more expensive than other flooring options out there, but have you ever wondered why? Hardwood floors tend to add value to your home, they are possibly the most attractive option, and they will outlive you if they're taken care of.

One could argue that hardwood flooring should be looked at as more of an investment than just a design feature. However, don't overlook their beauty and appeal, as they can easily be the focal point of your entire home. Contact After Five Floors today.

Hardwood Flooring is Ageless

Even years after installation, when it's worn and beat down, hardwood flooring still looks good. The scratches, worn finish, and dents show character, and some owners prefer this look. It will never go out of style.

If, however, you want your floors to look new, simply have them sanded down and refinished. They will look like the day they were originally installed.

Hardwood floors are resilient, they will last for years! There are cases where wood flooring has been found in homes, still intact, after 100 years.

To prolong the life of your hardwood floors, it is recommended that you do a
